Primary Function:

Responsible for providing GIS support for demining operations (Minefield, BAC, and Range Clearance) country-wide for the Afghanistan Wide Mine, Battle Area and Range Clearance Project. Responsible for the management, oversight, and training of the GIS Department.

Essential Functions:

• Lead, develop, train, supervise, and ensure the quality of work produced by GIS Department personnel


• Accountable for the maintenance, development, and implementation of Janus’ GIS related documentation to include work instructions, forms, standard operation procedures, and training


• Provide oversight of Digital Survey operations


• Ensure strict compliance with project safety and quality requirements/standards


• Produce, distribute, and/or assist with the development of additional products and documentation as required for the program, customer, or Janus


• Verify ad sign off on the Digital Survey Site Completion Certificate for completed Ranges whose data has passed QC


• Ensure GIS operations are in compliance with the Work Plan and PWS


• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, ther professionals, and the client


• Perform GIS analysis, queries, searches, data manipulation and ensure integrity of the data collected and how it is presented


• Assist with the planning, direction, and management of clearance operations


• Assist with identifying GIS related site requirements and deficiencies


• Responsible for assisting the Project Manager and Operations Manager with administrative, logistical, and operational issues as required


• Reports to the Operations Manager

Job Requirements:

• Degree in Geographic Information Systems, computer science, information systems, geography, or a closely related field


• Five (5) or more years of relevant experience preferred


• Must have at least five (5) years experience with ESRI software, specifically the ArcGIS suite (ArcInfo, ArcView, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox) and ESRI’s extensions (Spacial Analyst, 3D Analyst)


• Must have experience collecting geospatial data and managing data collection teams, as well as processing digital geospatial data using varying geospatial software


• Must be familiar with current federal and regulatory guidance for conducting MMRP geospatial surveys


• Must have experience with industry standard equipment such as Trimble GPS, Garmin GPS, and digital data loggers equipment and associated systems


• Advanced user level of computer systems and intermediate user level of Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook) and databases


• Must act with high ethical values and uphold corporate philosophy and confidentiality


• Must understand data types, how to import and export data from DBFs, personal geodatabases or text files and the limitations on the in each of these formats in Excel, Access and ArcGIS


• Ability to communicate company practices with project managers, employees and clients


• Ability to work outside normal work hours; be flexible to work on short notice when dictated by work load


• Ability to work in harsh working conditions when required


• Ability to travel away from primary work location in excess of normal work day occasionally for several weeks to months at a time


• Must be able to pass a detailed background investigation


• Must be able to pass a physical approving candidate for overseas work


• Must be able to meet the physical requirements dictated by project requirements


• Must be willing to travel OCONUS to potentially austere environments for extended periods of time


• Strong leadership, mentoring, and team building skills


• Knowledge of IMSMA and Mine Clearance preferred
