(AFG) OUTSIDE PLANT TECHNICIAN I


POSITION SUMMARY:


Installs, troubleshoots and repairs a broad range of telecommunications cabling media to include coaxial, fiber optic, Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP), main feeder cable (200,400,600 pair etc). Installs cable racks, conduit, panduit, and other support structures for the protection and aesthetics of cables. Tests cable for signal quality, continuity, and availability. Terminates and splices both copper and fiber optic cable. Reports to Work Center Supervisor or Site Lead.


MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:



  1. Pull telecommunications cabling through a wide variety of building architectures (both permanent and temporary, including tactical) through buried conduit (outside plant) routed between buildings, ceilings, raised floors and cable troths.




  2. Operate trenching equipment and/or other heavy equipment as outlined in the performance work statement to complete mission requirements.




  3. Terminate Category 5 UTP, coaxial, and fiber optic cables at designated work stations and in telecommunication closets and distribution frames.




  4. Prepare telecommunications rooms/closets in buildings to function as central and secondary distribution nodes for telecommunications cabling networks.




  5. Install hardware/systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-Hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls.




  6. Test and certify Category 5 UTP cabling, fiber optic and main feeder cable with ohm meters, toners and Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR).




  7. Splice copper and fiber optic cabling.




  8. Troubleshoot and correct both copper and fiber optic cable problems for lack of continuity, noise, signal loss and degradation, improper termination, excessive loss and intermittent problems.




  9. Establish and maintain cable records, use database software such as Remedy to track and control job orders, interpret drawings to troubleshoot, install and make



recommendations for new facilities and upgrades.


10.Performs additional duties as assigned.

Ditch Witch or similar trenching equipment


WORKING ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:


Working environment will be 60% indoor, 35% outside, and 5% in manholes and handholds. Individual should be able to lift up to 40 lbs unassisted. Required to climb ladders, enter confined spaces and drive over rough terrain. Some maintenance will expose you to insulation, extreme heat, water and heights. The outside work environment will also be very hot due to conditions within the region in. Personnel will also be required to stand for long periods of time.


Freedom to Act:The position will report directly to the Outside Plant Technician Lead but also will be directed by various Supervisors/managers.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education/Certifications : One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.


Education: High school diploma or equivalent.


Experience : Requires 5 – 7 years experience in the cable, telephone and Local Area Network


Installation and repair


Certification: Fiber Optic repair Course preferred.
