(AFG) Social Marketing Specialist

Organization Overview

The International Health Division is committed to the improvement of health and healthcare delivery around the world. Serving both the public and private sectors, our efforts include health policy research and evaluation, health promotion and disease prevention, health finance, and health systems management. Our impact is felt in policies that ensure healthcare access for women, children, and individuals with special needs, in strengthening health infrastructures, and HIV/AIDS solutions.

Opportunity

USAID/Afghanistan has been a key partner to the Ministry of Public Health in strengthening the provision of essential public health products and services, including social marketing of contraceptives and Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), for over a decade. In 2010, USAID ‘nationalized’ its social marketing activities and supported the establishment of the Afghan Social Marketing Organization (ASMO), a not-for-profit designed to integrate health and social marketing interventions to improve well-being and stimulate and increase private commercial sector participation.

USAID/Afghanistan has requested the Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector Plus (SHOPS Plus) project to strengthen the organizational capacity of ASMO in delivering high quality family planning, reproductive health and other services. Specific objectives include:

  • Improving the availability of contraceptives to rural populations while improving cost-recovery of products currently marketed by ASMO

  • Introducing new sustainable products to improve the health status of mothers and children

  • Increasing the use rate of contraceptives and other life-saving commodities through social and behavior change communications

  • Providing organizational capacity development and support to ASMO

To further these objectives, Abt Associates seeks a qualified Social Marketing Specialist to support the International Health Division in Afghanistan. The position requires experience in sales and marketing of fast moving consumer goods, project management, and developing and implementing brand marketing plans for consumer goods. The Specialist will be stationed at ASMO’s office in Kabul and will report to the Asia Regional Manager at Abt Associate’s Washington D.C. office.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • With support from regional and/or international experts in social marketing, advise ASMO senior management in the development, implementation and monitoring of sales and marketing plans for their suite of family planning and maternal and child health products

  • Support ASMO in program implementation, including monitoring progress, and collecting and reporting data to monitor technical and financial performance

  • Serve as in-country point of contact for SHOPS Plus, including liaising with USAID/Afghanistan, ASMO, SHOPS Plus home office staff, and consultants

  • Coordinate and supervise/support consultants to ensure high quality results and products

  • Perform other duties as may be required

Preferred Skills / Prerequisites

Minimum Qualifications

  • MA/MBA (7 – 10) years of experience OR PhD (4 – 6) years of experience OR the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Please send CV and cover letter to SHOPSPlus_Afghanistan@abtassoc.com by May 25, 2016.
