Instructional Design Specialist - Brandeis University - Waltham, MA

Library & Services at Brandeis University seeks an Instructional Design Specialist to promote educational engagement with digital content in The HistoryMakers Digital Archive, working with faculty, library staff, and others to embed HistoryMakers content into syllabi and teaching at Brandeis University and other academic institutions.

This is a nine-month, grant-funded, half-time position.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Archives & Special Collections at Brandeis University, the HistoryMakers Instructional Design Specialist will cultivate relationships with faculty across institutions; some travel may be required. Some telecommuting may be an option.

Examples of Key Responsibilities:
Explores research and teaching uses of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive by faculty. Engages faculty, students, librarians, and others across institutions to explore collaborative and creative academic engagement with digital content. Develops modules for classes and assists faculty with development of assignments and assessments.

Forms focus groups of faculty and other relevant parties to explore uses of The HistoryMakers content in teaching and research.

Contributes to development of new functional, organizational, and integrative features of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive.

Position Requirements

Work Experience: >2 years of relevant professional experience supporting faculty with course design in an academic institution.

Education: Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Information Science, Education, or other relevant field required.

Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of teaching tools for online content; experience with video content and born-digital material.

Skills & Knowledge

Experience with teaching tools for online content and understanding of learning outcomes. Lesson and curriculum planning skills and project management skills. Ability to communicate effectively with technical and academic project stakeholders. Knowledge of African American history preferred. Experience with digital video content preferred. Experience with or knowledge of oral history or historical resources and their use in academic courses preferred.

The HistoryMakers is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution committed to preserving, developing, and providing easy access to an internationally recognized archival collection of thousands of African American video oral histories. The HistoryMakers represents the single largest archival project of its kind in the world. Not since the recording of former slaves during the WPA Movement of the 1930s has there been a methodic and wide-scale attempt to capture the testimonies of African Americans. Our purpose is to educate through our archive and the HistoryMakers themselves about the history, lives, careers and contributions of African Americans. The HistoryMakers digital archive has users in 51 countries across the globe from Afghanistan to Norway, Nigeria, and China. In 2014, the Library of Congress was announced as our permanent repository. To date, Brandeis University, Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University, Cornell University, Emory University, the University of Chicago, Boston University, Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Iowa, University of Richmond, University of Pennsylvania, and Howard University have entered into licensing agreements of 3-7 years in length.
